Today's is about a band that is timeless for many generations. The song is even more ageless as it features a 1798 lyric poem.
It's an old English rime about a sea legend, Yes I am talking about
The Rime of The Ancient Mariner, from
Iron Maiden.
If you did not already know, the lyric of the song is not an original writing from Iron Maiden but rather and old poem that is usually read, in it's form.
However, they did interpret it wonderfully and with the right spirit behind the story.
Because I really feel like i am sailing aboard as a seaman, when listening to this.
The poem goes as follow: A third person narrates the story of a sailor who has returned from the sea.
As he walk on the land, he meets a man who is on his way to a wedding, and then he starts telling a story to that man.
The 'wedding guest' gets impatient but is fascinated and feared about the story. But he is totally mesmerized.
The Story is about the adventure of a ship, full of hopes, that just departed at sea.
They end up off the planned course because of a storm, and end up near cold Antarctica.
A good omen albatross is following the ship, since it's departure, and is praised by the crew.
But the captain believes it is not of good omen, and he eventually end up shooting the bird despite his crew's beliefs.
As the warmer and calmer seas lead them out of there, and the crew is happy again.
But eventually after, the ship goes back in uncharted cold, and windless waters.
Again, the crew gets angry and force the captain to wear the dead albatross on his neck for having killing it and to appease the spirit of the dead Albatross.
They eventually come across a cursed ghost vessel who is after their souls, and after this all of the crew member die one by one.
Only the captain is saved from this horrible fate so that he can tell his story to whoever he meets !
